When Manitoba’s agriculture industry speaks, Agriculture in the Classroom-Manitoba listens
We hear the challenges you’re facing.
You’re worried about misinformation shaping consumer demand and policy. Labour shortages and skills gaps. Sustainability and climate change. Changing markets and regulations.
The biggest problem? Not enough Manitobans understand the realities of modern agriculture and food production. Agriculture is one of Manitoba’s largest industries, but today’s students aren’t learning enough about the work you do to become the informed voters, consumers and decision-makers our industry needs to thrive. Meanwhile, the gap between consumers, the food they eat, and the people who produce it grows ever wider.
We are the bridge across that gap—and your partner in inspiring our future.
We have a vision for the future and a plan for getting there
Food connects us all, and feeding our province and the world is one of Manitoba’s superpowers. But few Manitoba students know where their food comes from or have any connection to the amazing people who produce it.
At Agriculture in the Classroom-Manitoba (AITC-M), we grow understanding by delivering free, high quality classroom resources, activities, and programs that educators can use to link agriculture to Manitoba curriculum in all subjects and at all grade levels, closing the gap between farm and plate, and inspiring the future of our industry.
Our Mission
is to inspire educators to promote agriculture literacy for a sustainable future.
Our Vision
Is of a future where:
- Every student knows where their food comes from and sees agriculture as a place of opportunity.
- Every educator has the tools to inspire tomorrow’s innovators, consumers and decision-makers.
- Every Manitoban understands the issues and challenges agriculture faces in its efforts to nourish the world safely and sustainably.
Our strategic focus
Following formal and informal conversations with industry partners and educators, we made the decision to shift our strategic focus in 2023.
The realization at the core of our new three-year strategic plan? Educators are our No. 1 Customer.
As educators ourselves, we understand the importance of reaching students early to improve literacy outcomes, but we know that to reach students, we must inspire their educators — whether they be in English or French classrooms, at home or in schools everywhere in the province. To increase agriculture literacy through student education, it all starts with the educator at the front of the room.
Here are the three pillars support our new strategic plan:
1. |
Optimize our resources and programs. We will create agriculture literacy resources and programs for every grade level in all types of learning environments that meet the needs of educators and align with the Pillars of Agriculture Literacy. |
2. |
Create and convert agriculture literacy champions. We need more educators, volunteers and partners to help us reach our big goals. This involves efforts to improve strategic communications, comprehensive work with government and advocacy, and establishing an improved volunteer program. |
3. |
Maximize our internal capacity. We take our financial support seriously and foster it carefully to safeguard your trust in us. We collaborate with the Agriculture in the Classroom Canada collective and other organizations to create new resources, expand resource offerings and create efficiencies in operational management, ensuring every dollar we raise is maximized for optimal output. |
The following six compass points guide everything we do:
- We will put educators first.
- We will focus on partnerships.
- We will measure success.
- We will deliver the right messages to the right people.
- We will diversify and expand sources of revenue.
- We will structure the organization for success.
A Message from Our Leadership
In the heart of Manitoba, a movement is underway to sow the seeds of agricultural literacy in the minds of young Manitobans.
Powered by passionate staff, volunteers, educators, and partners in government and industry, this movement is inspiring the next generation to understand and value the industry that feeds Manitoba and the world
Our mission has never been more vital, and the achievements of 2023 stand as a testament to the collective efforts of our dedicated team, generous partners, and the educators who bring our vision to life in classrooms across the province.
This year, we witnessed an unprecedented surge in engagement, reaching over 407,000 inspiring student experiences—a 221% increase from the previous year. This remarkable growth is a clear indication that our message is resonating, and the importance of agriculture in our lives is being embraced by a new generation.
Our new strategic plan focuses our efforts on optimizing our offerings, creating ag literacy champions, and maximizing our internal capacity to reduce agriculture’s labour gap, address misinformation, and provide educators with the tools they need to inspire future consumers, voters, and leaders.
Programs like the Agriculture Career Exploration (ACE) program have opened students’ eyes to the vast opportunities within the agricultural sector, while initiatives like the Amazing Agriculture Adventure have combated misinformation by offering hands-on learning experiences.
The power of partnership has been a cornerstone of our success. Support from partners who believe in our mission have been instrumental in expanding our reach and impact. Their commitment to multi-year funding has provided us with the stability needed to plan for the future and continue to inspire others to join our cause.
As we look ahead, we are excited to embark on new initiatives, expand our programs, and continue to inspire the future of Manitoba’s agriculture industry. We are committed to leading public trust in agriculture and influencing its success for years to come. With your continued support, we are confident that we can achieve our bold goal of signing on 2,026 new teacher champions and the same number of matching donors by the year 2026!
The momentum is building. Our movement is growing. Thank you for being a part of it.

Stronger engagement
Your support helped us evolve our digital communications to meet educators, partners, and volunteers where they are.
Showing our impact on LinkedIn.
After establishing a LinkedIn presence in 2022, we continued to use the platform to speak to an audience of partners, volunteers and potential donors in 2023. By creating content unique to LinkedIn, focused on our impact in the classroom and conversations with partners, we saw tremendous growth — from 418 followers and monthly impressions of 1,253 at the beginning of the year to 786 followers and 7,399 impressions at year’s end.
Last year was a movie!
An increased amount of video content on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube — platforms where we primarily reach educators — allowed us to show our impact in dynamic, engaging ways. On Facebook and Instagram, our audience viewed 5,300 minutes of video in 2023 vs. 3,600 minutes in 2022 — an increase of 147%. On YouTube, our audience viewed a whopping 39,300 minutes of video in 2023 vs. 6,700 minutes in 2022 — an increase of 587%!
We are also sharing our story in-person, attending trade shows, seminars, AGMs and conferences in Manitoba to have conversations with industry about our vision, and with educators about what we have to offer. This year, we reached 371 educators, volunteers, partners and members of the public through various in-person events.
For educators, we’ve made matching curriculum to agriculture resources easy with Grade at a Glance. These one-page sheets allow educators to match AITC resources to specific curriculum outcomes at their grade level for K-8, and subject area for Grades 9-12. We like to say that our resources are Monday morning ready, which means as soon as they get our resources, they are ready to use. With the Grade at a Glance resource, lesson planning has never been easier.
We are making a difference
Guided by our new strategic focus, AITC-M worked hard in 2023 to address some of our industry’s most pressing challenges by giving educators everything they need to inspire tomorrow’s consumers, voters, and leaders.
Bridging Agriculture’s Labour Gap
Canada’s agriculture industry must fill 123,000 jobs by 2030 to maintain a competitive workforce.
Today, four jobs are available for every post-secondary graduate in agriculture and food – jobs that pay above the national average. And yet, fewer than half of Manitobans can name an agriculture job beyond farming.
In 2023, AITC-M launched the Agriculture Career Exploration (ACE) program to engage Manitoba students in hands-on activities that open their eyes to the amazing career opportunities awaiting them in agriculture.
With your help, our ACE resources, career fairs, presentations and activities help students understand themselves, inspire them to imagine a future working in agriculture, and guide them along the pathway to achieving a meaningful career in our industry. We also provided professional development workshops for educators to help them lead agriculture-related career presentations, resources, and activities with confidence.
ACE wouldn’t have been possible without support from our post-secondary and industry partners.
Here are three examples of how you helped us inspire agriculture’s future workforce in 2023:
Cultivate Your Career
Using proven personal assessment methodologies, our Cultivate Your Career resource guides students to a richer understanding of their goals, interests, and strengths. Then, we help them discover the perfect career match in agriculture. Finally, we map out pathways they can follow to land the ag-related career of their dreams while highlighting resources that can help them along the way, such as scholarships and funding.

EngAGed Career Fair
Our industry partners want meaningful access to tomorrow’s workforce, and we delivered with our inaugural EngAGed Career Fair at Portage Collegiate Institute in November 2023. After completing a self-assessment, students explored agriculture and food careers aligned with their passions and skills. This personalized touch ensured a more meaningful experience for both students and exhibitors, who showcased high-demand roles in their sectors, provided insights into salaries and educational pathways, and engaged students with interactive activities.
“The event was a success, offering students insight into agriculture careers through practical workshops and engaging speakers… Encouraging students to learn about agriculture careers is crucial for fostering future leaders and innovators who can address global challenges while contributing to sustainability efforts. Overall, the event inspired students and highlighted the importance of agriculture careers.”

Career Case Videos & Lunch and Learn
Hands-on, collaborative and competitive, the Career Case Game has been one of our most effective ways of introducing high school students to career opportunities in agriculture.
This year, to market the resource and to make it easier for educators to run the game in their own classrooms, we partnered with Frank Digital on Career Case walkthrough videos in English and French. These five-minute videos feature real high school students playing the game, providing educators with insights into the game’s mechanics, how it integrates the Holland Code and Kareero app, and strategies for connecting the game to high school curriculum. In addition, AITC-M ran a Career Case Lunch & Learn for Manitoba educators to further their learning.
Addressing Misinformation
Misinformation has a significant impact on the agriculture industry, often leading to distorted views of farming practices, food production, and sustainability efforts. In today’s digital age, where information spreads rapidly, education plays a vital role in dispelling myths and fostering a deeper understanding of the agricultural sector, its challenges, and its contributions to society.
Through our free, high-quality, and easy-to-deliver programs and resources, AITC-M inspires educators to want to weave agriculture into their teaching so that every generation to come receives accurate, balanced, and current information.
Here are three examples of programs and resources that
helped combat misinformation in 2023:
AMAZING AGRICULTURE
ADVENTURE: ANIMALS
The Amazing Agriculture Adventure was back as an in-person event for the first time since the pandemic! In October 2023, students visited the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre to learn about Manitoba’s livestock industry by visiting stations highlighting dairy, beef, chicken, eggs, pork, bees, canola, and more. Stations highlighting veterinary care and watersheds created an opportunity for us to work with two new partners: 4H Manitoba and the Manitoba Association of Watersheds!

Follow the farmers
When enthusiastic farmer guides meet fascinated Manitoba students, you get Follow the Farmers! Season 2 of our virtual farm tour program took place through the 2022-23 school year and with plenty of help from our amazing video partner Penner Farm Services Manitoba and three commodity partners, we brought students into the exciting worlds of canola, wheat and beef production.
We also re-launched Season 1 and 2 activities as standalone resources, so educators can dive back into past Follow the Farmers canola, dairy, hogs and weather tours for an easy lesson plan.
Thanks to the expertise of our farmers, success of Follow the Farmers has grown beyond Manitoba. Follow the Hog Farmer became a recommended video on YouTube in 2023 and has amassed an incredible 41,000 views to audiences in Canada, the U.S., Philippines, India and the U.K among others.
“Thank you for the opportunity to share my story and passion alongside other tremendous producers and educators. The impact of these stories is so far reaching and is shaping how the next generation looks at their food and who’s growing it.”

Giving Our Partners a Voice
In 2023, four commodity associations each sponsored a full week of engaging, educational content on our social media and online platforms. We were thrilled to give our partners the opportunity to speak directly to educators and students, in their own voice, about the special role their commodity plays in feeding our world and driving our economy.

Celebrating Industry Success
Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM) happens every March across Canada. This year’s theme in Manitoba was Follow The Food: Exploring Food Loss and Waste, which included a hands-on, inquiry-based resource to help students gain a better appreciation as to the value of food, the resources that go into making it, and how the agriculture industry in Manitoba works hard to reduce food loss and waste at every step of the supply chain.
“The students seemed to grasp the idea of “food loss” really well, especially the things they can do to minimize food loss at home. One observation was that students can save food by freezing it and eating it later!”
“The students were amazed by the fact that a chemist could work to help improve food quality. For them, only farmers could work in this area.”

Champion Award
JESSICA CANNING,
Crocus Plains Regional School
(Brandon, Manitoba)
Jessica’s passion for showing her students where their food comes from stems from being a full-time farmer. “Jessica’s family farm has been in operation for 130 years and the wealth of experience and knowledge that comes with that is something she brings to her classroom every day,” says colleague and nominator Christopher Sarkonak.
Congratulations, Jessica!
“She doesn’t only teach it; she lives the life!”
“Jessica often walks into the school with a flowery farm dress on, big dirty farm work boots, and a dozen eggs under her arm, something the students get a kick out of!”

partnership
We reached more students than ever this year — and you made that happen. Thank you to all our 2023 supporters for empowering us to foster future talent, enhance public trust in agriculture, and forge meaningful connections between the people who feed our world, and those who will lead our industry in the years ahead.
The Leadership Circle
In 2023, we began approaching long-term supporters for multi-year funding commitments, which provide the stability we need to plan for the future, achieve our goals, and inspire others to join us in this crucial endeavor.
A special thank you to the following organizations for joining our Leadership Circle with your groundbreaking support in 2023!
A long-time AITC-M supporter, Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA) has played a vital role in the development of popular resources, including the Manitoba Seed Kit and the Foundations of Manitoba Agriculture virtual resource hub.
“We are proud to support the outstanding work AITC-M does to teach students about our vibrant and vital industry. This multi-year commitment reflects our belief in the value of agriculture education and the importance of maintaining and expanding these valuable programs and resource offerings.”
– Pam de Rocquigny, CEO, Manitoba Crop Alliance
Support and guidance from Manitoba Egg Farmers (MEF) has made possible the development of popular AITC-M offerings such as the Foundations of Manitoba Agriculture and Eat Well: Exploring Canada’s Food Guide.
“We fully support AITC-M’s vision for agriculture education in the province and we’re looking forward to working together to expand Manitoba students’ knowledge base. Farmers are caregivers of the land and the animals that produce our food. AITC-M is a wonderful ambassador for agriculture and bridges the gap between farmers and children who want to learn about where their food comes from. We look forward to a mutual partnership.”
– Catherine Kroeker-Klassen, Chair, Manitoba Egg Farmers
Thanks to support from the Manitoba Association of Watersheds (MAW), AITC-M introduced the Caring for Our Watersheds resource to hundreds of Manitoba early years classrooms during Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM) in March 2024, and is already planning watershed resources and content for middle and senior students.
“Manitoba’s 14 watershed districts are committed to education and enhancement of watershed literacy within their local communities, and we at MAW are thrilled to have the opportunity to build on that principle province-wide through our partnership with Agriculture in the Classroom-Manitoba. We recognize that AITC-M is a trusted partner within the educational system, and we are honoured to work alongside them to build watershed resources into their lesson plans.”
– Lynda Nicol, Executive Director, Manitoba Association of Watersheds
(MCGA and Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association should also be mentioned here.)
Our partnership with MCGA has already yielded incredible outcomes such as our Foundations of Manitoba Agriculture virtual resource hub. MCGA has been instrumental in creating innovative learning resources like the Manitoba Seed Kit/Trousse de graines du Manitoba and the Follow the Canola Farmer virtual farm tour.
“AITC-M’s excellent work to create curriculum-based content that connects students to where and how their food is grown only increases in importance as these future consumers and decision-makers become further removed from the realities of farming. Investing in AITC-M is an investment in future generations of ag-savvy consumers and leaders in the province, and we are excited to support this fantastic organization to continue to grow and succeed to benefit everyone in agriculture over the long-term.”
– Delaney Ross Burtnack, Executive Director, Manitoba Canola Growers Association
“The MVMA proudly supports Agriculture in the Classroom, recognizing the critical importance of enlightening young minds about the vast and vibrant world of agriculture, including its intrinsic connection to veterinary medicine. We believe in nurturing a deep appreciation and understanding among the next generation about how veterinary professionals play a pivotal role in sustaining agricultural ecosystems. Through this partnership, we aim to inspire and empower students with the knowledge that feeds nations and cultivates a sustainable future.”

Proud member of Agriculture in the Classroom-Canada
Agriculture in every classroom, inspiring every student
Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C) is dedicated to cultivating meaningful connections to agriculture and food for students and educators nationwide. Proudly partnering with member organizations in each of the 10 provinces, AITC-C connects a strong network across Canada that aims to engage, empower and inspire youth by delivering valuable ag education to students across the country.
AITC-C partners with its members across the country to deliver national initiatives such as Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM), which aims to get agriculture industry professionals into classrooms across the country to share their ag experiences and engage students with hands-on activities during the month of March.
In February, AITC-C launched Mission Explorium, a new national competition that takes students on a journey of discovery as they work to create a sustainable future. To celebrate Career Month in November, AITC-C launched a national campaign to promote careers in agriculture to students embarking on their career journey. I Am The Future is a new video tool that gives young Canadians a chance to picture themselves in a role in agriculture. This new tool connects youth to the thinkAG website, our exploratory, career-focused initiative. AITC members also promote and distribute our national teaching resources, which are accessible through a national Resource Library and provide over 900 agriculture-related resources to educators across the country.
Celebrating over two million student experiences annually across Canada, Agriculture in the Classroom Canada attributes its success to the passion and commitment of the member organizations.
In Manitoba, AITC-M’s Executive Director, Katharine Cherewyk represents the province’s interests nationally and plays an important role as Vice Chair and a member of AITC-C’s board of directors.
“AITC-M plays a key role in building strong meaningful connections with students, educators and industry professionals as our boots on the ground in Manitoba,” said Mathieu Rouleau, Executive Director of AITC-C. “We’re very proud of what the AITC collective has achieved nationwide thanks to the dedication and passion of our member organizations. By working together, we’re stronger, reaching more people and making a bigger impact across the country.”

YOU are a part of the solution – here’s how!
New resources. Expanded programs. More educators, more classrooms, more impact. Inspiring the future of Manitoba’s agriculture industry will take nothing less.
Guided by our strategic vision and building on our successes in 2023, AITC-M has set a bold new goal: to sign on 2,026 new educator champions by the year 2026, ensuring that the wonders of agriculture reach every corner of Manitoba’s educational landscape.
To achieve our goal, we need to raise $5 million over the next three years – and we need your help to get there.
Your continued support will help us expand our programs — reaching more classrooms and deepening our impact.
Act Now:
Your Donation Makes
a Difference
All our programming is donor-dependent and only possible thanks to generous support from partners year after year.
Have you already renewed your support of AITC-M in 2023? If yes, THANK YOU!
If you haven’t, do you know that every student experience in 2023 cost AITC-M $3? For just $75, you can sponsor a whole classroom of around 25 students and invest in the future of agriculture.
Join us today. Your donation makes you a key player in shaping a future where education and agriculture grow hand in hand, fostering public trust and ensuring the sector’s success for generations.
